Where I come from, a legal marriage has nothing to do with who (if anyone) says the words. It’s all to do with the paperwork. If there was no paperwork, I think it would be correct to say there was no marriage.

Technically it’s not the vows that matter….
…all a legal officiate (and the state he marries couples in must be the one to grant him that status) needs to do is say….
“So and so, do you take This and That to be your husband, do you This & That, take So and So to be your wife”..and after you two say yes then “I pronounce you Husband & Wife”…or just “I pronounce you Man & Wife”….
That’s all they need to do…everything else spoken is legally not nessesary…just a whole lot more serious, and romantic than the above however….
There must be qualified witnesses to sign any paperwork, ditto with the officiate & the newly married couple..then the marriage must be registered with the County Clerk’s Office or Town Hall-whoever handles it within a certain period of time or the marriage is NOT recognised legal…..because there is no official record of it.
So, as long as your husband spoke the legal words marrying you guys, and the proper paper work was filed…yup, it’sl egal.
